Working with S355J0WP-N
Is S355J0WP easy to machine?
Comparable to ordinary HSLA structural steel (about 60 % of AISI 1212); coated carbide tooling at moderate cutting speeds is sufficient. The high phosphorus makes chips slightly brittle but gives good chip breaking.
Can S355J0WP be welded?
SMAW, GMAW and SAW are all usable with weathering-matched consumables such as E8018-W2 or ER80S-G. Because of the high phosphorus, control heat input and avoid highly restrained multi-pass joints; preheat 80–120 °C for thick plate or low ambient temperatures.
Can S355J0WP be formed, bent or molded?
Cold bending performance is good; sheet bend radii are normally 1.5–2.5 t, taking the larger value transverse to the rolling direction. Hot form at 900–1050 °C and avoid heavy deformation in the 200–500 °C range.
What surface finishes work on S355J0WP?
Natural wet/dry weathering or an acidic pre-rusting treatment is preferred. If painting is required, blast-clean thoroughly and use a weathering-compatible primer; do not leave the steel bare where water collects, in salt spray, or in direct contact with aluminium or galvanized parts.

S355J0WP-N — frequently asked
What is S355J0WP-N used for?
S355J0WP-N is typically used for exposed architectural steel, railway wagons, outdoor sculptures and unpainted structural cladding. In short: classic Corten A equivalent; patinates without painting; thin-section weathering sheet.
What is the yield strength of S355J0WP-N?
S355J0WP-N has a typical yield strength of 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 505 MPa (73.2 ksi) — weaker than 70% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.
Is S355J0WP-N easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (60/100, better than 83% of steel grades). Comparable to ordinary HSLA structural steel (about 60 % of AISI 1212); coated carbide tooling at moderate cutting speeds is sufficient. The high phosphorus makes chips slightly brittle but gives good chip breaking.
Can S355J0WP-N be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (68/100). SMAW, GMAW and SAW are all usable with weathering-matched consumables such as E8018-W2 or ER80S-G.
