Working with A36-CR

Is A36 easy to machine?

Cuts easily but gummy — use positive-rake tooling, coolant and moderate speeds; hot-rolled scale is abrasive so break it with a first roughing pass.

Can A36 be welded?

Prequalified for all common processes (SMAW/GMAW/FCAW/SAW) with E70XX-class filler; preheat only for thick sections or restrained joints per AWS D1.1.

Can A36 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold bending, punching and roll forming; keep bend lines transverse to rolling direction and allow generous inside radii on thick as-rolled plate.

What surface finishes work on A36?

No natural corrosion resistance — shot blast to SA 2.5 then paint, hot-dip galvanize, zinc plate, phosphate or black oxide; polishes only to a dull finish and will rust unprotected.

A36-CR — frequently asked

What is A36-CR used for?

A36-CR is typically used for welded structural frames, base plates and gussets, machine bases and heavy weldments, brackets and mounting plates, bridge components and handrails, stairs and ladders. In short: cheapest structural steel.

What is the yield strength of A36-CR?

A36-CR has a typical yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — weaker than 67% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is A36-CR easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (70/100, better than 96% of steel grades). Cuts easily but gummy — use positive-rake tooling, coolant and moderate speeds; hot-rolled scale is abrasive so break it with a first roughing pass.

Can A36-CR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (95/100). Prequalified for all common processes (SMAW/GMAW/FCAW/SAW) with E70XX-class filler; preheat only for thick sections or restrained joints per AWS D1.1.

What surface finishes work on A36-CR?

No natural corrosion resistance — shot blast to SA 2.5 then paint, hot-dip galvanize, zinc plate, phosphate or black oxide; polishes only to a dull finish and will rust unprotected.

Can A36-CR be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold bending, punching and roll forming; keep bend lines transverse to rolling direction and allow generous inside radii on thick as-rolled plate.

What is the maximum service temperature of A36-CR?

A36-CR is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between A36-HR and A36-CD?

HR is the default condition — default stock condition for plate, structural shapes and merchant bar; cheapest and most weldable, with mill scale and loose dimensional tolerance. CD: choose for round/square/flat bar where a bright straight surface, tight size tolerance and higher yield are wanted for shafts and machined parts. Yield strength is 260 MPa in HR versus 415 MPa in CD.

Can FabDigit make parts in A36-CR?
