Working with 08F CR-Full-Hard

Is 08F easy to machine?

Soft low-carbon steel smears and raises burrs; use sharp high-positive-rake tools, high speed and plenty of coolant. For automatic turning of small parts switch to a free-machining steel such as Y12 or 1215.

Can 08F be welded?

Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, CO2 gas-shielded MAG, submerged arc and brazing all run without preheat or post-weld heat treatment. Rimmed steel is slightly more porosity-prone, so use a deoxidised wire such as ER70S-6.

Can 08F be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bending, deep drawing and cold heading are good, but strain ageing causes Lueders bands and stretcher strains; skin-pass before stamping and use the material promptly. For demanding deep-drawn parts switch to 08Al or DC03.

What surface finishes work on 08F?

Surface protection is required: zinc or nickel electroplating, phosphating, hot-dip galvanizing, or e-coat plus paint. Subsurface porosity and segregation make mirror polishing and high-decorative plating unreliable.

08F CR-Full-Hard — frequently asked

What is 08F CR-Full-Hard used for?

08F CR-Full-Hard is typically used for simple stampings, enclosures and low-cost sheet metal parts. In short: lowest-cost stamping steel; largely superseded by killed steels; very low carbon equivalent.

What is the yield strength of 08F CR-Full-Hard?

08F CR-Full-Hard has a typical yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — stronger than 59% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is 08F CR-Full-Hard easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (52/100, better than 52% of steel grades). Soft low-carbon steel smears and raises burrs; use sharp high-positive-rake tools, high speed and plenty of coolant. For automatic turning of small parts switch to a free-machining steel such as Y12 or 1215.

Can 08F CR-Full-Hard be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, CO2 gas-shielded MAG, submerged arc and brazing all run without preheat or post-weld heat treatment. Rimmed steel is slightly more porosity-prone, so use a deoxidised wire such as ER70S-6.

What surface finishes work on 08F CR-Full-Hard?

Surface protection is required: zinc or nickel electroplating, phosphating, hot-dip galvanizing, or e-coat plus paint. Subsurface porosity and segregation make mirror polishing and high-decorative plating unreliable.

Can 08F CR-Full-Hard be formed, bent or molded?

Cold bending, deep drawing and cold heading are good, but strain ageing causes Lueders bands and stretcher strains; skin-pass before stamping and use the material promptly. For demanding deep-drawn parts switch to 08Al or DC03.

What is the maximum service temperature of 08F CR-Full-Hard?

08F CR-Full-Hard is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 08F CR-Annealed and 08F-CD?

CR-Annealed is the default condition — use this cold rolled, annealed and skin-passed sheet as the default for general stampings, bends and enclosures, where 36 % elongation and a clean surface matter more than strength. CD: pick cold drawn bar or wire for rivets, pins and cold-headed parts that need tight tolerances, good surface and 450 MPa tensile, accepting elongation reduced to 15 %. Yield strength is 200 MPa in CR-Annealed versus 370 MPa in CD.
