What is BAg-18?

BAg-18 (UNS P07600) is a tin-modified, cadmium-free silver brazing filler in the AWS BAg family, developed as a substitute for BAg-1/1a where cadmium is prohibited. It flows well and stays ductile, and is stocked as wire, rod, flux-coated rod, strip, preforms, powder and paste for refrigeration and electrical work. The as-brazed deposit is about 210 MPa yield, 380 MPa tensile and 28 % elongation, with service limited to 200 °C. Its wide melting range calls for fast, uniform heating to avoid liquation; BAg-10 is the choice when higher joint service temperature is needed. BAg-18 has a density of 9.9 g/cm³ (0.358 lb/in³), lighter than 70% of precious metal grades. It melts at 600°C (1,112 °F). BAg-18 has a yield strength of 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) — stronger than 61% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

What is BAg-18 used for?

  • refrigeration/HVAC tubing
  • electrical components
  • general fabrication where Cd-free filler required

Advantages

  • Low embodied carbon — 70 kg CO₂/kg, better than 76% of precious metal grades

Limitations

  • Limited service temperature — 200°C (392 °F), worse than 89% of precious metal grades
  • Difficult to weld — 20/100, worse than 86% of precious metal grades
  • Needs corrosion protection — 62/100, worse than 83% of precious metal grades
  • Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Working with BAg-18

Is BAg-18 easy to machine?

Rarely machined; the soft, gummy deposit smears — use sharp tools, high rake and light cuts if joint dressing is required.

Can BAg-18 be welded?

Not a weldable structural alloy — it is a brazing filler; braze at 720–845 °C with fast, uniform heating to limit liquation of the wide melting range.

Can BAg-18 be formed, bent or molded?

Very ductile — readily drawn to fine wire, rolled to foil and stamped into rings/preforms without interstage cracking.

What surface finishes work on BAg-18?

Remove flux residue with hot water/mechanical scrub to avoid corrosion; the deposit polishes and electroplates well but tarnishes in sulphur-bearing air.
