What is 835 Silver?

835 Silver (Silber 835) is a silver–copper alloy at 83.5% silver, the intermediate German fineness between 800 and 925, used for mid-grade German silverware and cutlery. It is softer than 800 Silver at 57 HB and 110 MPa yield but reaches the same 300 MPa tensile with 40% elongation, and is supplied as sheet, strip and wire for stamping, spinning and hollowware (320 W/m·K, 80% IACS). Copper content still allows firescale and sulfide tarnish and the fineness carries no sterling hallmark; 925 sterling is the direct alternative when a hallmark or better tarnish resistance is needed. 835 Silver has a density of 10.2 g/cm³ (0.368 lb/in³), lighter than 57% of precious metal grades. It melts at 779°C (1,434 °F). 835 Silver has a yield strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) and a tensile strength of 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) — weaker than 80% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 80 GPa (11.6 Msi).

Working with 835 Silver

Is 835 Silver easy to machine?

Machines like a soft gummy copper alloy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide or HSS tools, high speed, light feed and generous lubrication; collect all swarf as refinable scrap.

Can 835 Silver be welded?

Laser or pulse-arc (PUK) welding works well with matching filler; torch brazing with cadmium-free Ag solders is standard, but avoid overheating to limit copper firescale.

Can 835 Silver be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent in the annealed state for raising, spinning, deep drawing and stamping; interanneal at 600–650 °C every 50–60 % reduction and pickle to remove oxide.

What surface finishes work on 835 Silver?

Polishes to a bright mirror; protect with rhodium or fine-silver plating and anti-tarnish lacquer, or deliberately oxidise for contrast — anodizing is not applicable.

Is 835 Silver easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (50/100, better than 74% of precious metal grades). Machines like a soft gummy copper alloy — use sharp polished high-rake carbide or HSS tools, high speed, light feed and generous lubrication; collect all swarf as refinable scrap.

Can 835 Silver be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (60/100). Laser or pulse-arc (PUK) welding works well with matching filler; torch brazing with cadmium-free Ag solders is standard, but avoid overheating to limit copper firescale.

What surface finishes work on 835 Silver?

Polishes to a bright mirror; protect with rhodium or fine-silver plating and anti-tarnish lacquer, or deliberately oxidise for contrast — anodizing is not applicable.

Can 835 Silver be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent in the annealed state for raising, spinning, deep drawing and stamping; interanneal at 600–650 °C every 50–60 % reduction and pickle to remove oxide.

What is the maximum service temperature of 835 Silver?

835 Silver is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 835 Silver Annealed and 835 Silver Spring?

Annealed is the default condition — standard stocking condition for sheet, strip and wire that will be raised, spun, drawn or chased. Spring: for clips, catches and springy tension elements in silverware and jewellery findings. Yield strength is 110 MPa in Annealed versus 505 MPa in Spring.
