What is BAg-24?

BAg-24 is a tin-modified, cadmium-free silver braze filler (UNS P07505) developed as a drop-in replacement for BAg-1a, with comparable flow and melting characteristics. It is chosen for cadmium-restricted refrigeration and instrument work and is supplied as rod, hard rod, strip, preforms, flux-coated rod, powder and paste. Default values are 420 MPa tensile, 250 MPa yield, 28% elongation and 55 HRB, the most ductile of the low-temperature BAg fillers on file. Braze at 707–843 °C and heat quickly, since slow cycles cause zinc loss and nickel-rich sludge; BAg-22 is the alternative where higher joint strength is needed. BAg-24 has a density of 9.3 g/cm³ (0.336 lb/in³), lighter than 85% of precious metal grades. It melts at 660°C (1,220 °F). BAg-24 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — stronger than 81% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

What is BAg-24 used for?

  • refrigeration/AC tubing
  • instrument brazing
  • cadmium-restricted general fabrication

Advantages

  • Low embodied carbon — 55 kg CO₂/kg, better than 86% of precious metal grades
  • High strength — 250 MPa (36.3 ksi), better than 81% of precious metal grades

Limitations

  • Needs corrosion protection — 62/100, worse than 83% of precious metal grades
  • Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Chemical & Environmental2

Corrosion resistance is good (62/100), worse than 83% of precious metal grades.

Corrosion ResistanceGood62/100
Chemical Resistance SummaryGood resistance to fresh water, mild atmospheres and most organic media; nickel improves resistance to interfacial (crevice) attack on stainless joints. Attacked by ammonia/amines (stress corrosion of the Zn-Cu phase), sulfur compounds (tarnish), nitric acid and strong oxidisers; avoid contact with mercury and halide-rich flux residues, which must be washed off.

Sustainability3

Producing a kilogram of BAg-24 takes about 800 MJ of energy and emits 55 kg of CO₂ — less than 83% of precious metal grades. Typical recycled content is 40%.

Working with BAg-24

Is BAg-24 easy to machine?

Rarely machined — the alloy is soft and gummy; supply as drawn wire, rolled strip or stamped preforms instead of machined shapes.

Can BAg-24 be welded?

Not a structural weld filler; braze at 707–843 °C with a boron-modified fluoride flux (AWS FB3-A/C) or in inert gas, and heat quickly to limit zinc loss and Ni-rich sludge.

Can BAg-24 be formed, bent or molded?

Very ductile in the annealed state — draws to fine wire, rolls to foil and stamps into rings/washers with interanneals; work-hardens moderately.

What surface finishes work on BAg-24?

Wash off corrosive flux residue with hot water or acid pickle; the joint fillet takes light polishing and will tarnish in sulfur-bearing air, so plate or lacquer for decorative use.
