What is BAg-13a?

BAg-13a (UNS P07560) is the zinc-free, cadmium-free version of BAg-13, an Ag-Cu-Ni brazing filler that avoids zinc volatilization at brazing temperature. That makes it the default choice for vacuum and hydrogen furnace brazing of stainless steel assemblies, and it is supplied as annealed or hard-drawn wire, strip, foil, preforms, powder and paste. The deposit shows about 210 MPa yield, 420 MPa tensile and 22 % elongation, with a formability score of 85. The 900–980 °C brazing range and tight 0.05–0.13 mm clearance requirement limit base metal choice; BAg-13 is the lower-cost option where zinc loss is not a concern. BAg-13a has a density of 9.75 g/cm³ (0.352 lb/in³), lighter than 77% of precious metal grades. It melts at 771°C (1,420 °F). BAg-13a has a yield strength of 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — stronger than 61% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 95 GPa (13.8 Msi).

Working with BAg-13a

Is BAg-13a easy to machine?

Rarely machined; the soft Ag-Cu matrix is gummy — use sharp tools, high rake and light cuts if trimming preforms.

Can BAg-13a be welded?

Not a structural weld metal; joints are made by furnace, vacuum, hydrogen, induction or torch brazing at 900–980 °C with tight 0.05–0.13 mm clearance.

Can BAg-13a be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed stock draws to fine wire and rolls to 0.05 mm foil; interstage annealing needed because it work-hardens quickly.

What surface finishes work on BAg-13a?

Joints are normally left as-brazed; clean flux residues in hot water/acid, and passivate stainless assemblies afterwards — silver fillets tarnish in sulfur-bearing air.
