What is BAg15CuZnSn?

BAg15CuZnSn is a cadmium-free Ag-Cu-Zn-Sn braze filler to GB/T 10046 with roughly 15 % silver, the tin addition keeping the melting range usable at that low silver level. It is chosen for cost-sensitive copper, brass and bronze joints and is stocked as bare rod, annealed wire, strip, stamped rings, flux-cored rod and paste; as-brazed metal runs about 420 MPa tensile at 18 % elongation. Low silver means a wide melting range, sluggish capillary flow and poor filling of narrow gaps, and zinc loss rules it out of vacuum brazing. Where better flow or stainless-steel wetting is needed, step up to a 45 % silver grade such as ПСр45 or an AWS BAg-1 type. BAg15CuZnSn has a density of 8.4 g/cm³ (0.303 lb/in³), lighter than 99% of precious metal grades. It melts at 640°C (1,184 °F). BAg15CuZnSn has a yield strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) — stronger than 70% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 22% and the elastic modulus is 95 GPa (13.8 Msi).

Working with BAg15CuZnSn

Is BAg15CuZnSn easy to machine?

Rarely machined; if preforms must be turned, run low speed with sharp high-positive-rake tools because the alloy smears and drags. Collect all chips and swarf for silver reclamation, since scrap is credited by weight.

Can BAg15CuZnSn be welded?

This is a braze filler, not a fusion welding consumable. When brazing, avoid overheating: excess heat volatilizes zinc and promotes Ag-Cu eutectic segregation, leaving a porous, weak fillet.

Can BAg15CuZnSn be formed, bent or molded?

Continuously cast stock draws to wire and rolls to strip, but work hardening is pronounced; interanneal at 550–600 °C and cool quickly before further reduction.

What surface finishes work on BAg15CuZnSn?

Borax-type flux residue must be removed completely with a hot water or dilute acid wash, otherwise the hygroscopic residue absorbs moisture and corrodes the joint. Fillets can be polished, or nickel/tin plated to mask the color difference against copper and brass.
