What is BAg-10?

BAg-10 (UNS P07700) is a high-silver, cadmium-free brazing filler from the AWS BAg family, with a melting range above the BAg-1 series. Engineers select it where cadmium fumes must be avoided but a higher joint service temperature is acceptable; it is supplied as annealed or cold-drawn wire, strip, stamped preforms, powder-paste and flux-coated forms. The as-brazed deposit runs about 200 MPa yield, 400 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation, 85 HB, 130 W/m·K and 32 % IACS, with service to 400 °C. It contains zinc, so heating must be rapid and vacuum brazing is not appropriate; BAg-13a is the zinc-free alternative for furnace work. BAg-10 has a density of 9.8 g/cm³ (0.354 lb/in³), lighter than 75% of precious metal grades. It melts at 690°C (1,274 °F). BAg-10 has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) — stronger than 51% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

What is BAg-10 used for?

  • food and medical equipment brazing
  • high-purity piping
  • elevated-temperature service joints

Advantages

  • Easy to machine — 55/100, better than 86% of precious metal grades
  • Low embodied carbon — 70 kg CO₂/kg, better than 76% of precious metal grades

Working with BAg-10

Is BAg-10 easy to machine?

Rarely machined — soft and gummy; use sharp tools, high rake and light cuts, and recover all chips as silver scrap.

Can BAg-10 be welded?

Not a structural weld metal; joints are made by torch, induction, furnace or dip brazing at 745–845 °C with rapid heating to limit zinc loss.

Can BAg-10 be formed, bent or molded?

Readily drawn to fine wire, rolled to thin shim and stamped into rings; interstage annealing needed after heavy cold reduction.
