What is BAg-6?

BAg-6 (UNS P07503, BAg50CuZn) is a cadmium-free 50% silver Ag-Cu-Zn brazing filler with a higher liquidus than BAg-5, used where slightly higher-temperature service and good ductility are needed without cadmium. Typical as-brazed values are 410 MPa tensile, 220 MPa yield and 30% elongation, with joints rated to a maximum service temperature of 370 °C; forms include wire and rod, annealed strip, flux-coated rod, powder and paste. It brazes at 774-870 °C with an AWS FB3-A flux, and the zinc content rules out vacuum brazing - use BAg-8a or BVAg-0 for that. BAg-6 has a density of 9.1 g/cm³ (0.329 lb/in³), lighter than 89% of precious metal grades. It melts at 690°C (1,274 °F). BAg-6 has a yield strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 410 MPa (59.5 ksi) — stronger than 67% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

Working with BAg-6

Is BAg-6 easy to machine?

Not normally used as a machined part. If fillets or preforms must be trimmed, use sharp tools with high rake angles and low speeds, since the alloy is tough and sticks to the cutting edge.

Can BAg-6 be welded?

This is the filler metal itself: braze by torch, induction or furnace (protective atmosphere) at 774-870 °C. The zinc content makes it unsuitable for vacuum brazing; use an AWS FB3-A silver brazing flux and heat quickly to limit zinc evaporation.

Can BAg-6 be formed, bent or molded?

Ductility in the annealed condition is high - the alloy can be cold-drawn to wire, rolled to strip and stamped into brazing rings. Intermediate anneal at 600-650 °C after heavy cold work.

What surface finishes work on BAg-6?

Remove all residual flux after brazing with hot water or pickling. Joints can be polished, nickel plated or gold plated to prevent sulfide tarnish.
