What is BAg-13?
BAg-13 (UNS P07540) is a nickel-bearing, cadmium-free silver brazing filler formulated for wetting and corrosion resistance on stainless and other alloy steels, at brazing temperatures above BAg-3. It is chosen for joints that must resist corrosive service and see higher temperatures than standard Ag-Cu-Zn fillers, and is stocked as wire, flux-coated rod, strip, rings, powder and paste. The as-brazed deposit is about 430 MPa tensile with 22 % elongation and 120 HB. The 857–970 °C brazing range limits it to base metals that tolerate that heat, and the zinc content makes overheating and vacuum brazing problematic — use BAg-13a where zinc must be excluded. BAg-13 has a density of 9.6 g/cm³ (0.347 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of precious metal grades. It melts at 718°C (1,324 °F). BAg-13 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 420 MPa (60.9 ksi) — stronger than 81% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 24% and the elastic modulus is 90 GPa (13.1 Msi).

Working with BAg-13
Is BAg-13 easy to machine?
Not a structural machining stock; the deposited fillet is soft and gummy — use sharp tools and light cuts if a joint must be dressed.
Can BAg-13 be welded?
Not fusion-welded; it is itself a filler — braze at 857–970 °C with an active silver-brazing flux (or in dry H2/vacuum for the flux-free version) and avoid overheating that volatilises zinc.
Can BAg-13 be formed, bent or molded?
Readily drawn to wire, rolled to 0.05 mm strip and stamped into rings; interanneal to avoid edge cracking in heavy reductions.
BAg-13 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Ag | 53 – 55 | 54 |
| Zn | 4 – 6 | 5 |
| Niwetting/corrosion addition | 0.5 – 1.5 | 1 |
| Cdimpurity limit; alloy is classed cadmium-free | ≤ 0.15 | |
| Others (total)total of other elements | ≤ 0.15 | |
| Curemainder, nominally ~40 % | balance |
What surface finishes work on BAg-13?
Remove all flux residue with hot water or acid pickle to prevent corrosion; the fillet can be polished or nickel/chrome plated, but avoid ammonia-based cleaners.
