What is BAg-23?

BAg-23 is a high-silver, cadmium-free braze filler (UNS P07850) with a high melting range, intended for demanding high-temperature and corrosion-resistant brazed joints. It is used in aerospace and jet engine assemblies where joint integrity must hold to about 450 °C, and is stocked as annealed and hard-drawn wire, strip and foil, powder and paste. As-brazed tensile strength is 340 MPa with 20% elongation. The 971–1038 °C brazing range demands vacuum or very dry hydrogen and rules out temperature-sensitive base metals; BAg-21 is the alternative when a lower brazing temperature is required. BAg-23 has a density of 9.8 g/cm³ (0.354 lb/in³), lighter than 75% of precious metal grades. It melts at 960°C (1,760 °F). BAg-23 has a yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — weaker than 59% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

What is BAg-23 used for?

  • aerospace high-temperature joints
  • corrosion-resistant assemblies
  • jet engine parts

Limitations

  • Low electrical conductivity — 8 % IACS, worse than 86% of precious metal grades
  • Poor heat conductor — 45 W/m·K (26 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 82% of precious metal grades
  • Limited ductility — 20%, worse than 77% of precious metal grades
  • Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Working with BAg-23

Is BAg-23 easy to machine?

Very soft and prone to smearing, so it is generally not machined; shear or stamp it into preplaced rings and shims as required, using sharp positive-rake tooling with ample lubricant.

Can BAg-23 be welded?

This is the filler metal itself. Braze at 971–1038 °C, preferably in vacuum or dry hydrogen with a dew point below -50 °C; brazing in air requires a high-temperature active flux of the AWS FB3-C type.

Can BAg-23 be formed, bent or molded?

Ductility in the annealed condition is good — it draws to 0.3 mm wire and rolls to 0.05 mm foil. Above roughly 50% cold reduction, intermediate anneal at 600–700 °C in a protective atmosphere to prevent manganese oxidation.

What surface finishes work on BAg-23?

Remove flux residue after brazing by hot water or mechanical cleaning. Joints can be polished; long exposure to sulphur-bearing environments darkens the surface, so nickel plate or apply a protective coating where appearance matters.
