What is Ag145?

EN ISO 17672 Ag145 (L-Ag45Sn, BAg45CuZnSn) is a cadmium-free Ag-Cu-Zn-Sn brazing filler that replaces AWS BAg-1 where cadmium is restricted under RoHS and REACH. It is widely stocked in Europe as rod, flux-coated rod, wire, strip, rings and paste, brazes at 670–690 °C and gives deposits of 450 MPa tensile strength, 340 MPa yield and 20 % elongation. The zinc content requires fast heating and fume extraction and rules out vacuum furnace brazing. Ag134 or Ag130 lower the silver cost where a higher brazing temperature is acceptable. Ag145 has a density of 9.1 g/cm³ (0.329 lb/in³), lighter than 89% of precious metal grades. It melts at 640°C (1,184 °F). Ag145 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) — stronger than 94% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

Working with Ag145

Is Ag145 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — turned or slit only for preform production; use sharp tools and light feeds, though the alloy is normally supplied ready-formed.

Can Ag145 be welded?

Not welded; it is applied by torch, induction, furnace (with flux or in controlled atmosphere) or resistance brazing at 670–690 °C with fast heating to limit zinc loss.

Can Ag145 be formed, bent or molded?

Readily drawn to fine wire, rolled to 0.05 mm strip and blanked into rings; interanneal at about 550–600 °C when heavy cold work is applied.
