What is BAg-2a?
BAg-2a is a 30 % silver cadmium-bearing Ag–Cu–Zn–Cd brazing filler (UNS P07300), the economy member of the cadmium BAg group with flow behaviour close to BAg-2. It is used for cost-sensitive production brazing of steel and brass, and is supplied as wire, flux-coated rod, strip, preforms and paste. As-brazed joints give 400 MPa tensile with 28 % elongation. The lower silver content narrows the process window relative to BAg-2, service is limited by the cadmium-bearing matrix, and the alloy cannot be used on food or potable-water systems — step up to BAg-2 for easier flow or BAg-24 for a cadmium-free joint. BAg-2a has a density of 9.4 g/cm³ (0.34 lb/in³), lighter than 82% of precious metal grades. It melts at 607°C (1,125 °F). BAg-2a has a yield strength of 210 MPa (30.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) — stronger than 61% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 90 GPa (13.1 Msi).
What is BAg-2a used for?
- general steel/brass brazing
- appliance manufacturing
- hardware assembly
Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 45 kg CO₂/kg, better than 93% of precious metal grades
Limitations
- Limited service temperature — 200°C (392 °F), worse than 89% of precious metal grades
- Difficult to weld — 20/100, worse than 86% of precious metal grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 62/100, worse than 83% of precious metal grades
- Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Manufacturability6
BAg-2a's machinability is fair (45/100, better than 59% of precious metal grades); weldability poor (20/100); formability very good (80/100).

Working with BAg-2a
Is BAg-2a easy to machine?
The filler itself is seldom machined; it is soft and sticky, so use sharp tools with large rake angles and ample lubrication. Squeezed-out filler at the joint is best removed by grinding.
Can BAg-2a be welded?
Not used as a fusion welding consumable. Braze by torch, induction or furnace (a reducing atmosphere or vacuum is not recommended because cadmium and zinc volatilise and contaminate the chamber), with 0.05–0.13 mm joint clearance and an FB3-A / AWS Type 3A silver brazing flux.
Can BAg-2a be formed, bent or molded?
Ductility is high: it can be drawn to 0.3 mm wire, rolled to 0.1 mm foil and stamped into preforms. Intermediate annealing at about 550–600 °C with rapid cooling is needed once work hardened.

What surface finishes work on BAg-2a?
Rinse with hot or warm water after brazing and pickle to remove borax-type flux residue. Cadmium-bearing joints must not be used in food or drinking-water systems; they can be covered by nickel or chrome plating, and local exhaust ventilation is mandatory to prevent cadmium fume poisoning.
