What is BAg-7?
BAg-7 (Ag56CuZnSn) is a cadmium-free silver brazing filler in which a tin addition lowers the melting range and improves wetting compared with plain Ag-Cu-Zn grades. It is used for refrigeration circuits and electrical component assembly, and is available as wire and rod, annealed wire, strip and foil, flux-coated rod and powder-paste. Deposit properties are about 290 MPa yield, 415 MPa tensile and 25 % elongation, with roughly 22 % IACS conductivity and a service ceiling near 200 °C. Where cost matters more than braze temperature, the lower-silver BAg-5 (Ag45CuZn) is the obvious substitute. BAg-7 has a density of 9.5 g/cm³ (0.343 lb/in³), lighter than 81% of precious metal grades. It melts at 618°C (1,144 °F). BAg-7 has a yield strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) — stronger than 89% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).

Working with BAg-7
Is BAg-7 easy to machine?
Rarely machined; the alloy is soft and gummy — use sharp tools, positive rake and light feeds if trimming preforms.
Can BAg-7 be welded?
Not a weldable structural alloy; it is itself a brazing filler — avoid arc processes that vaporize zinc.
Can BAg-7 be formed, bent or molded?
Readily drawn to fine wire and rolled to foil; anneal between heavy reductions before bending rings or shims.

What surface finishes work on BAg-7?
Brazed joints are silver-bright but tarnish in sulfur atmospheres; remove flux residue with hot water/citric-acid pickle, then polish or plate as needed.
