What is C80300?

C80300 is a high-purity cast copper to ASTM B369, used as a conductor material in cast form rather than as a strengthened alloy. It provides 100% IACS electrical conductivity and 391 W/m·K thermal conductivity with 40% elongation, so it is specified where current-carrying capacity or heat transfer governs the design. Strength is low — 62 MPa yield, 172 MPa tensile, 44 HB — service is capped near 200 °C, and the metal is gassy with poor fluidity and high shrinkage in the foundry. Where slightly lower conductivity is acceptable and casting behaviour matters more, C80500 or C80900 are the normal alternatives. C80300 has a density of 8.94 g/cm³ (0.323 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,083°C (1,981 °F). C80300 has a yield strength of 62 MPa (8.99 ksi) and a tensile strength of 172 MPa (24.9 ksi) — weaker than 99% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 117 GPa (17 Msi).

Working with C80300

Is C80300 easy to machine?

Gummy and stringy — use sharp, high-rake, polished-flute tools, high speed, low feed and flood coolant; expect ~20 % of 1212 free-machining rate.

Can C80300 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW with pure-Cu or deoxidized filler and 400–600 °C preheat because of the 390 W/m·K heat sink; keep interpass clean and avoid hydrogen pickup.

Can C80300 be formed, bent or molded?

Cast to shape only: pure copper is gassy with poor fluidity and high shrinkage, so use generous risers, chills, deoxidation (Li/B/P-free where conductivity matters) and thick sections.

What surface finishes work on C80300?

Solders and brazes readily; electroplate Ni/Sn/Ag for contact surfaces; bright-dip or lacquer polished parts since bare copper tarnishes quickly.

C80300 — frequently asked

What is C80300 used for?

C80300 is typically used for electrical conductor castings, heat-transfer and heat-sink castings, switchgear terminals and clamps, bus bar connectors, water-cooled furnace components and welding equipment jaws and holders. In short: highest-conductivity cast copper; 100% IACS castings; ductile but low strength.

What is the yield strength of C80300?

C80300 has a typical yield strength of 62 MPa (8.99 ksi) and a tensile strength of 172 MPa (24.9 ksi) — weaker than 99% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is C80300 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (20/100, worse than 98% of copper alloy grades). Gummy and stringy — use sharp, high-rake, polished-flute tools, high speed, low feed and flood coolant; expect ~20 % of 1212 free-machining rate.

Can C80300 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (45/100).

What is the maximum service temperature of C80300?

C80300 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between C80300-M01 and C80300-M07?

M01 is the default condition — standard stocked condition for one-off and low-volume conductive copper castings. M07: best choice for bar, tube and hollow stock: densest structure, highest conductivity and most consistent machining. Yield strength is 62 MPa in M01 versus 70 MPa in M07.
