What is HBsC1?
HBsC1 is a JIS H5120 high-strength brass of the manganese-bronze type, offering 180 MPa yield, 490 MPa tensile, 28% elongation and about 100 HB in the default condition, with service to 200 °C. It is cast in sand, permanent-mould, centrifugal and continuous processes and supplied stress-relieved, which suits gears and marine components loaded beyond the range of leaded yellow brass. The low-lead beta structure machines at only 25-30% of free-cutting brass, shrinkage is high, and stagnant seawater can cause dezincification. Where machinability dominates, YBsC3 is the nearer choice. HBsC1 has a density of 8.3 g/cm³ (0.3 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 862°C (1,584 °F). HBsC1 has a yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) — weaker than 59% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 103 GPa (14.9 Msi).
What is HBsC1 used for?
- marine propeller hubs
- gears
- structural castings
Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 2.8 kg CO₂/kg, better than 100% of copper alloy grades

Working with HBsC1
Is HBsC1 easy to machine?
Machines to roughly 25–30 % of free-cutting brass: use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed and flood coolant since the low-Pb β-phase structure is gummy and tears at low feed.
Can HBsC1 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW with silicon-bronze or aluminium-bronze filler is possible for repair; expect zinc fume and porosity, preheat 150–200 °C and stress-relieve after welding.
Can HBsC1 be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only — good fluidity in sand, permanent mould, centrifugal and continuous casting; needs generous risering because of a fairly wide freezing range and high shrinkage.
HBsC1 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Cu | 55 – 60 | 57.5 |
| Al | 0.5 – 1.5 | 1 |
| Fe | 0.5 – 1.5 | 1 |
| Mn | 0.1 – 1.5 | 0.5 |
| Snimpurity limit | ≤ 1 | |
| Pbimpurity limit | ≤ 0.4 | |
| Znremainder, approx. 33–42 % | balance |
What surface finishes work on HBsC1?
Takes a bright mechanical polish and accepts Ni/Cr or tin plating and chemical patination; not anodizable, and lacquer or cathodic protection is advisable in stagnant seawater to limit dezincification.

How much does HBsC1 cost?
HBsC1 is a high-cost copper alloy ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
HBsC1 — frequently asked
What is HBsC1 used for?
HBsC1 is typically used for marine propeller hubs, gears and structural castings. In short: high-strength JIS cast brass; weld-repairable manganese bronze; gummy, low machinability.
What is the yield strength of HBsC1?
HBsC1 has a typical yield strength of 180 MPa (26.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) — weaker than 59% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is HBsC1 easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (32/100, worse than 57% of copper alloy grades). Machines to roughly 25–30 % of free-cutting brass: use sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed and flood coolant since the low-Pb β-phase structure is gummy and tears at low feed.
Can HBsC1 be welded?
With care — weldability is rated fair (35/100). GTAW/GMAW with silicon-bronze or aluminium-bronze filler is possible for repair; expect zinc fume and porosity, preheat 150–200 °C and stress-relieve after welding.
What surface finishes work on HBsC1?

Can HBsC1 be formed, bent or molded?
A casting alloy only — good fluidity in sand, permanent mould, centrifugal and continuous casting; needs generous risering because of a fairly wide freezing range and high shrinkage.
What is the maximum service temperature of HBsC1?
HBsC1 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between HBsC1 F-SAND and HBsC1 F-CENT?
F-SAND is the default condition — standard as-cast sand-mould condition; the normal stocked/ordered form for gears, marine fittings and general high-strength brass castings. F-CENT: pick for bushings, worm-gear rims and sleeves where dense, porosity-free rings with best mechanical consistency are required. Yield strength is 180 MPa in F-SAND versus 205 MPa in F-CENT.
