What is AlBC3?

AlBC3 (C95500) is a nickel-aluminium bronze casting alloy strengthened by aluminium with nickel and iron additions, and available heat treated (TA, TQ50) as well as as-cast. Typical properties are 275 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation, 170 HB and service to 300 °C, with seawater corrosion resistance rated 78/100 — the strength level engineers choose over tin bronzes for propellers and seawater pumps. It is supplied as sand, centrifugal and continuous castings. Machining is slow with gummy chips, the alloy is not anodizable, and AlBC4 (C95800) is preferred where large weld repairs are routine. AlBC3 has a density of 7.53 g/cm³ (0.272 lb/in³), lighter than 96% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,040°C (1,904 °F). AlBC3 has a yield strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 57% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 110 GPa (16 Msi).

Working with AlBC3

Is AlBC3 easy to machine?

Tough, gummy chips — use sharp positive-rake carbide, rigid setups, moderate speed with generous coolant; expect ~30 % of AISI 1212 rates.

Can AlBC3 be welded?

Readily GTAW/GMAW welded with ERCuNiAl (matching NAB) filler, preheat 150–250 °C on heavy sections, followed by 675 °C temper anneal for seawater duty.

Can AlBC3 be formed, bent or molded?

A casting alloy: sand, centrifugal and continuous casting all standard; control melt oxides, use chills/risers for directional solidification, no meaningful cold forming.

What surface finishes work on AlBC3?

Takes a fine mechanical polish and darkens naturally to a protective bronze patina; not anodizable, plating and soldering require aggressive removal of the aluminium oxide film.
