What is Cu-OF?
Cu-OF (C10200) is oxygen-free copper with oxygen held at 10 ppm or less, supplied as wrought bar, sheet and strip in O60 through H10 tempers and as gas-atomized powder for L-PBF, EB-PBF, binder jetting and DED. Engineers use it where electrical and thermal conductivity dominate, at 88 % IACS and 340 W/m·K on the reference condition, for induction coils, heat sinks and RF hardware. It is soft and low in strength — 150 MPa yield, 230 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation, 65 HB — with service to 200 °C and machinability near 20. High IR reflectivity complicates laser processing; use CuCrZr where strength is needed. Cu-OF has a density of 8.94 g/cm³ (0.323 lb/in³), heavier than 90% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,083°C (1,981 °F). Cu-OF has a yield strength of 150 MPa (21.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) — weaker than 69% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 115 GPa (16.7 Msi).

Working with Cu-OF
Is Cu-OF easy to machine?
Gummy and abrasive-free but built-up-edge prone: use sharp, polished, high-positive-rake carbide, high speed (200–400 m/min), heavy flood coolant and avoid dwelling; AM parts machine similarly to annealed bar.
Can Cu-OF be welded?
Best joined by EB, laser (green preferred) or GTAW/GMAW with 150–500 °C preheat because of the huge thermal conductivity; brazing and soldering are excellent, and no hydrogen embrittlement risk since O ≤10 ppm.
Can Cu-OF be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability in the soft tempers (deep draw, spin, bend to 0T); anneal 400–600 °C in inert or reducing atmosphere between heavy reductions; L-PBF needs green/blue laser or high-power IR plus preheat to overcome reflectivity.
Cu-OF chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| O≤10 ppm; AM powder typically 150–400 ppm total O after atomisation | ≤ 0 | 5×10⁻⁴ |
| PTU1 limit (GB/T 5231) | ≤ 3×10⁻⁴ | |
| BiTU1 limit | ≤ 0 | |
| PbTU1 limit | ≤ 0 | |
| STU1 limit | ≤ 0 | |
| CuCu + Ag, ASTM B170 Grade 2 / GB/T 5231 TU1 | ≥ 99.95 (balance) |
What surface finishes work on Cu-OF?
Not anodisable — electropolish or bead-blast then plate (Ni barrier + Ag/Au for RF), or protect with benzotriazole/clear lacquer; AM surfaces normally need chemical/abrasive polishing to reach low RF loss.
