What is C55282?

C55282 is a silver-phosphorus-copper brazing filler with a narrower and lower melting range than BCuP-4, intended for close-fit copper joints that must be brazed at reduced temperature. It is supplied as bare rod, flux-coated rod, strip, stamped preforms and paste; as-brazed properties are about 260 MPa tensile strength, 3 % elongation and 110 HB. The alloy self-fluxes on copper but is brittle and must not be applied to steel, cast iron or nickel alloys, where iron and nickel phosphides form. Where a wider melting range and more ductility are acceptable, BCuP-4-type C55281 is the nearest alternative. C55282 has a density of 8.2 g/cm³ (0.296 lb/in³), lighter than 85% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 645°C (1,193 °F). C55282 has a tensile strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi), weaker than 80% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 100 GPa (14.5 Msi).

What is C55282 used for?

  • close-tolerance copper tube joints
  • refrigeration systems
  • electronic component brazing

Limitations

  • High embodied carbon — 14 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 100% of copper alloy grades

  • Difficult to weld — 10/100, worse than 98% of copper alloy grades
  • Limited ductility — 3%, worse than 97% of copper alloy grades
  • Limited service temperature — 150°C (302 °F), worse than 96% of copper alloy grades

Working with C55282

Is C55282 easy to machine?

Not a structural machining alloy; the Cu-P eutectic phase makes it hard and brittle, so cut preforms by shearing/stamping rather than turning.

Can C55282 be welded?

Used as a filler, not welded — never apply to steel, cast iron or nickel alloys, where brittle iron/nickel phosphides form.

Can C55282 be formed, bent or molded?

Limited cold ductility: drawn to rod/wire and rolled to thin strip in the mill, but avoid tight field bending of rods.

What surface finishes work on C55282?

Joints self-flux on copper and need only light cleaning; residues from fluxed brass/bronze joints must be washed off to prevent corrosion.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on copper alloy parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

How much does C55282 cost?

C55282 is a high-cost copper alloy ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
