What is 2214?

2214 is the high-purity, low-iron registered variant of 2014, with Fe held below 0.30 % to improve toughness and fatigue performance, in the heat-treatable Al-Cu-Si-Mg system. It is supplied mainly in T6/T651 as thick plate, forgings and extrusions for aircraft structural fittings, machined components and highly loaded tooling, reaching strength close to medium-carbon steel at about one third the density. Corrosion resistance is poor and needs cladding, anodizing or coating, fusion welding is hot-crack prone, and formability is moderate; standard 2014 is the more available equivalent. 2214 has a density of 2.8 g/cm³ (0.101 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of aluminum grades. It melts at 507°C (945 °F). 2214 has a yield strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — stronger than 89% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 9% and the elastic modulus is 73 GPa (10.6 Msi).

What is 2214 used for?

Working with 2214

Is 2214 easy to machine?

Excellent chip control in T6/T651 — use polished-flute carbide, high speeds with flood or MQL; avoid re-introducing residual stress in thin machined webs.

Can 2214 be welded?

Not recommended for fusion welding (hot cracking with Cu-rich melt); join by rivets, bolts, adhesive or friction-stir; if arc welded, use 4145/4043 filler and re-heat-treat.

Can 2214 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in O or fresh T4 (within a few hours of quench, or hold sub-zero); T6/T651 has limited bend ductility and springback is high.
