What is 2A14?
2A14 (LD10) is a forging-grade Al-Cu-Si-Mg alloy of the 2000-series family, comparable to 2014 and supplied as die forgings, extrusions, bar and plate in O, H112, T4, T6, T62 and T651. It is chosen where forged aerospace fittings need 400 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation and 135 HB after ageing, with 155 W/m·K conductivity and 40 % IACS. Fusion weldability is poor (25/100), formability in the aged condition is low (30/100) and the service ceiling is about 150 °C; 2014-T6 is the direct alternative. 2A14 has a density of 2.8 g/cm³ (0.101 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of aluminum grades. It melts at 507°C (945 °F). 2A14 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — stronger than 88% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 72 GPa (10.4 Msi).

Working with 2A14
Is 2A14 easy to machine?
Machines well in T4/T6 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; long chips in O temper, so age-harden before finish machining for best surface.
Can 2A14 be welded?
Fusion welding is not recommended (hot cracking, big HAZ strength loss); join by riveting, bolting or friction stir welding, and re-heat-treat plus age if arc welding is unavoidable.
Can 2A14 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent hot workability at 420–470 °C for die forging and extrusion; cold form only in O or freshly quenched W/T4 condition, T6 parts should not be bent.

What surface finishes work on 2A14?
Use chromic or hard anodizing plus primer/topcoat, or Alclad/cladding, for corrosion protection; decorative bright anodizing gives a dull yellow tint because of the 4 % Cu.
