What is 2A12?
2A12 (LY12) is a high-strength Al-Cu-Mg 2000-series alloy corresponding closely to 2024, stocked as plate and sheet in O, T3, T4, T351, T42, T6, T62, T81, T851 and H112. It is used for aerospace tooling, jig plate and precision fixtures because it reaches 470 MPa tensile, 325 MPa yield, 19% elongation and 120 HB while machining cleanly at a rating of 72. Corrosion resistance is poor (rated 30) so cladding, conversion coating or paint is required, fusion welding is not recommended and service is limited to 120 °C; 7075 is the alternative for higher strength, 6061 where welding is needed. 2A12 has a density of 2.78 g/cm³ (0.1 lb/in³), heavier than 74% of aluminum grades. It melts at 502°C (936 °F). 2A12 has a yield strength of 325 MPa (47.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — stronger than 81% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 19% and the elastic modulus is 73 GPa (10.6 Msi).

Working with 2A12
Is 2A12 easy to machine?
Machines very well in T4/T351/T851 with sharp carbide tools, high speed and flood coolant; chips are short and surface finish is good, but annealed O temper is gummy.
Can 2A12 be welded?
Not recommended for MIG/TIG fusion welding (hot cracking and severe HAZ strength loss); join by riveting, bolting, adhesive bonding or friction-stir welding.
Can 2A12 be formed, bent or molded?
Form in O or freshly quenched (W) temper and re-age; T3/T4 sheet tolerates moderate bends at large radii, artificially aged tempers are nearly unformable.
