| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Annealed | Pick the annealed intermediate state for forging and machining when maximum plasticity (18% elongation, 60 HB) is needed for secondary forming before solution treatment and ageing. | 90 | 180 | 18 | 60 HB | 46 % IACS |
As fabricated | Use as-forged or hot-extruded stock only as a blank for subsequent heat treatment and machining; at 155 MPa yield and 12% elongation it is not intended for load-bearing service. | 155 | 275 | 12 | 80 HB | 44 % IACS |
T6 variant, underaged | Choose the solution treated and under-aged temper when complex high-temperature forgings need extra ductility and toughness (11% elongation) at a strength trade-off down to 340 MPa yield. | 340 | 420 | 11 | 115 HB | 41 % IACS |
T6, stress relieved by compression | Pick for large open-die or closed-die forgings: compression stress relief between solution treatment and artificial ageing cuts machining distortion and residual-stress cracking, with 7% elongation. | 370 | 430 | 7 | 122 HB | 40 % IACS |
T6Default Solution heat treated and artificially aged | Specify solution heat treated and artificially aged material for pistons, impellers and hot-running forgings needing the best strength/heat resistance mix (380 MPa yield, 200 °C); elongation drops to 8%. | 380 | 440 | 8 | 125 HB | 40 % IACS |
What is 2A80?
2A80 (LD8) is a high-temperature Al-Cu-Mg-Fe-Ni forging alloy of the GB 2000-series family, available in O, F, T6, T61 and T652 and in the performance class of 2618A. It is used for pistons and compressor parts that must hold load near 200 °C, with default T6 properties of 440 MPa tensile, 380 MPa yield, 8% elongation, 125 HB and 150 W/m·K. Weldability (22), formability (20) and corrosion resistance (33) are all low, and the Fe/Ni/Si hard phases abrade tooling, so it is a forge-and-machine alloy rather than a fabrication alloy. 2A70 is the closest alternative when more ductility is needed. 2A80 has a density of 2.8 g/cm³ (0.101 lb/in³), heavier than 81% of aluminum grades. It melts at 510°C (950 °F). 2A80 has a yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) — stronger than 86% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 74 GPa (10.7 Msi).

Working with 2A80
Is 2A80 easy to machine?
Machinability in T6 is good, but the Fe/Ni/Si hard phases abrade tooling; use diamond or fine-grain carbide inserts, high spindle speeds, large rake angles and ample coolant.
Can 2A80 be welded?
Fusion weldability is poor, with hot cracking and a large drop in joint strength. Use bolted or riveted joints, friction welding or diffusion bonding, and re-solution treat and age after any welding.
Can 2A80 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forging and die forging at about 420–470 °C work well. T6 is essentially not cold formable, so complete any bending in the O temper and heat treat afterwards.

What surface finishes work on 2A80?
Hard anodizing raises wear resistance on piston ring grooves and skirts. Decorative anodizing comes out dark; for outdoor or humid service use chromate conversion coating plus paint, or alclad protection.

What is the maximum service temperature of 2A80?
2A80 is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
