What is A2024-RAM2?
A2024-RAM2 is a nano-functionalized version of the classic 2024 Al-Cu-Mg wrought chemistry, seeded with ceramic nucleants so it solidifies crack-free in LPBF. Engineers use it to print aerospace-grade parts at wrought-2024-like strength: 430 MPa yield, 500 MPa tensile, 6 % elongation, 140 HB, 120 W/m·K and 32 % IACS in the default condition, with AB, SR, T4, T6, T7, HIP+T6 and powder listings on file. Corrosion resistance is low (score 33) and service tops out at 150 °C, so coatings are mandatory in chlorides. It is not fusion weldable; A6061-RAM2 is the alternative when weldability and conductivity matter more than strength. A2024-RAM2 has a density of 2.78 g/cm³ (0.1 lb/in³), heavier than 74% of aluminum grades. It melts at 502°C (936 °F). A2024-RAM2 has a yield strength of 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) — stronger than 90% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 6% and the elastic modulus is 78 GPa (11.3 Msi).

- aerospace structural parts
- high-strength brackets
- replacement of wrought 2024 components
Advantages
- High strength — 430 MPa (62.4 ksi), better than 90% of aluminum grades
Limitations
- High embodied carbon — 15 kg CO₂/kg, worse than 97% of aluminum grades

Working with A2024-RAM2
Is A2024-RAM2 easy to machine?
Machines like wrought 2024 but the hard ceramic dispersoids are abrasive — use polycrystalline diamond or coated carbide, sharp positive rake, high speed and flood coolant.
Can A2024-RAM2 be welded?
Not recommended for fusion welding (Al-Cu-Mg hot-cracking sensitivity); join by fasteners, adhesive or friction stir where qualified.
Can A2024-RAM2 be formed, bent or molded?
Produced net shape by LPBF at ~30–60 µm layers with preheated plate; the RAM nucleant suppresses solidification cracking, so no cold forming step is involved.
