What is 2065?
2065 is an Al-Cu-Li plate alloy (A92065) in the 2000-series family, developed for lower wing skins that need high compressive strength together with better corrosion behaviour than earlier Al-Li grades. Supplied as plate in O, T3/T351, T39 and T8/T84/T851 tempers, the default condition provides 460 MPa yield, 505 MPa tensile, 9% elongation, 145 HB, 100 W/m·K and 31% IACS. Service is limited to 120 °C, elongation is modest, and fusion welding is not viable, so structures are friction stir welded or riveted. 2024-T351 plate is the conventional substitute where density is less critical. 2065 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 535°C (995 °F). 2065 has a yield strength of 460 MPa (66.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 505 MPa (73.2 ksi) — stronger than 92% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 9% and the elastic modulus is 78 GPa (11.3 Msi).

Advantages

- Limited service temperature — 120°C (248 °F), worse than 79% of aluminum grades
- Difficult to weld — 25/100, worse than 76% of aluminum grades

Working with 2065
Is 2065 easy to machine?
Machines like a hard 2000 series: sharp polished carbide, high speed, generous coolant and full stress-relieved (T×51) stock to control distortion in thin-web wing panels.
Can 2065 be welded?
Not suited to fusion welding (hot cracking, Li burn-off); join by friction stir welding, laser-FSW hybrid or riveting/bolting.
Can 2065 be formed, bent or molded?
Form in O/T3/T351 before final ageing; T8 plate has limited cold formability and is normally machined or age-formed to contour.
