Working with ERTi-4 AW-SR

Is ERTi-4 easy to machine?

Weld deposit machines like CP-Ti: low speed, high feed, flood coolant, sharp uncoated-carbide tools; avoid dwelling to prevent work hardening and galling.

Can ERTi-4 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon torch, trailing and backing shielding; keep interpass <150 °C and joint spotlessly clean — straw/blue tint means oxygen pickup and must be removed.

Can ERTi-4 be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is bendable cold but Grade 4 chemistry has the lowest ductility of the CP fillers; weldments generally formed warm (200–400 °C) if at all.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-4?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF or abrasive-blast with clean media, then passivate; colour anodising per AMS 2488 II gives durable oxide tints, no plating needed for corrosion.

ERTi-4 AW-SR — frequently asked

What is ERTi-4 AW-SR used for?

ERTi-4 AW-SR is typically used for welding Grade 4 CP titanium components, aerospace fasteners and brackets and high-strength unalloyed Ti structures. In short: strongest CP-Ti filler; matches Grade 4 base metal; lowest ductility CP filler.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-4 AW-SR?

ERTi-4 AW-SR has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) — weaker than 60% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-4 AW-SR easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, better than 64% of titanium grades). Weld deposit machines like CP-Ti: low speed, high feed, flood coolant, sharp uncoated-carbide tools; avoid dwelling to prevent work hardening and galling.

Can ERTi-4 AW-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW with high-purity argon torch, trailing and backing shielding; keep interpass <150 °C and joint spotlessly clean — straw/blue tint means oxygen pickup and must be removed.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-4 AW-SR?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF or abrasive-blast with clean media, then passivate; colour anodising per AMS 2488 II gives durable oxide tints, no plating needed for corrosion.

Can ERTi-4 AW-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Wire is bendable cold but Grade 4 chemistry has the lowest ductility of the CP fillers; weldments generally formed warm (200–400 °C) if at all.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-4 AW-SR?

ERTi-4 AW-SR is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-4-AW and ERTi-4 AW-SR?

AW is the default condition — default condition: undiluted weld metal deposited with full inert-gas shielding, no post-weld heat treatment. AW-SR: choose when residual stress, distortion control or stress-corrosion service in the weldment matters; slightly lowers strength, raises ductility. Yield strength is 550 MPa in AW versus 520 MPa in AW-SR.
