What is Custom 465?
Custom 465 is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless (UNS S46500, ASTM A564, AMS 5936) strengthened by Ni3Ti precipitates on ageing in tempers from H900 to H1150. It is the higher-strength successor to Custom 455, with improved toughness and corrosion resistance, and is normally bought as bar and forgings for airframe and landing gear hardware. Condition A gives 795 MPa yield and 1000 MPa tensile at 30 HRC with service to 400 °C; peak-aged material reaches 47–51 HRC. Machinability (38) and formability (40) are low, so form and rough-machine before ageing; Custom 455 and 15-5 PH are the nearest alternatives. Custom 465 has a density of 7.78 g/cm³ (0.281 lb/in³), lighter than 57% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,400°C (2,552 °F). Custom 465 has a yield strength of 795 MPa (115 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 96% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with Custom 465
Is Custom 465 easy to machine?
Rough machine in Condition A with sharp, rigid, positive-rake carbide tooling and heavy flood coolant; finish after aging with low feeds since aged 47–51 HRC material work-hardens and is abrasive due to Ti.
Can Custom 465 be welded?
Good GTAW/EBW/laser weldability with matching or 465 filler, no preheat needed; re-solution-anneal plus age (or at minimum re-age) after welding to restore joint strength.
Can Custom 465 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold form, bend and cold draw only in Condition A; aged material is essentially non-formable, and hot work should be done above ~1000 °C with slow cooling.
