What is 1230A?
1230A is a commercially pure aluminum grade at 99.3% Al in the EN 573 1000-series family, sitting between 1200 and 1350 in purity and strengthened only by cold rolling. It is used for electrical conductor foil, cable sheathing and general fabrication, with 231 W/m·K thermal conductivity, 60.5% IACS electrical conductivity, a formability score of 99 and weldability of 93; supply forms are foil, strip and sheet in O, H1x, H2x and H112. Annealed strength is 30 MPa yield and 85 MPa tensile at 23 HB with 38% elongation, so it carries no structural load and machinability is poor (25). Service is limited to about 150 °C; 1350 is the alternative when conductor specifications are tighter. 1230A has a density of 2.71 g/cm³ (0.0979 lb/in³), heavier than 51% of aluminum grades. It melts at 646°C (1,195 °F). 1230A has a yield strength of 30 MPa (4.35 ksi) and a tensile strength of 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) — weaker than 97% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 38% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 1230A
Is 1230A easy to machine?
Very gummy and prone to built-up edge — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, low feed and generous lubricant; hard tempers (H18) cut cleaner than O.
Can 1230A be welded?
Excellent with GTAW/GMAW using 1100/1188 filler; no cracking issues, but the HAZ anneals back to O-temper strength.
Can 1230A be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability in O/H2x tempers — deep drawing, spinning and foil rolling; springback low, but hard tempers need generous bend radii.
