What is ER1188?
ER1188 is an ultra-high-purity 1000-series aluminum welding filler to AWS A5.10 (also designated S Al 1450), supplied as wire and rod in AW, O, F and H14 conditions. It is used to weld high-purity 1000-series base metals in semiconductor, chemical and reflective applications where filler impurity content must be held to a minimum, and it retains high conductivity at 234 W/m·K and 64% IACS. Strength is very low — 50 MPa tensile, 20 MPa yield, 18 HB with 45% elongation — and service is limited to about 150 °C, so joints should not be load-bearing. Where purity is less critical and higher joint strength is wanted, ER1100 is the usual substitute. ER1188 has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 657°C (1,215 °F). ER1188 has a yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 50 MPa (7.25 ksi) — weaker than 100% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 68 GPa (9.86 Msi).

Working with ER1188
Is ER1188 easy to machine?
Rarely machined; if required use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed, low feed and flood lubricant to avoid smearing and built-up edge.
Can ER1188 be welded?
Designed as filler for GTAW/GMAW of 1050A/1060/1070/1080/1199 — use AC or He-rich shielding, keep the wire oxide-free and gloved, and expect very low joint strength so joints must not be load-bearing.
Can ER1188 be formed, bent or molded?
Extremely ductile in O temper; drawn H1x wire work-hardens fast, so re-anneal before tight coiling or re-drawing.

ER1188 — frequently asked
What is ER1188 used for?
ER1188 is typically used for semiconductor process equipment, high-purity chemical piping and reflector fabrication. In short: highest-purity aluminum filler; highest conductivity filler wire; very low joint strength.
What is the yield strength of ER1188?
