What is 1080A?
1080A is a refined commercially pure aluminum grade (99.8% Al) in the EN 573 1000-series family, corresponding to the former British 1A designation, and is strengthened only by cold work. It is specified for reflective surfaces, corrosion service and electronic foil, with 231 W/m·K thermal conductivity, 62% IACS electrical conductivity and the highest formability rating in the series; forms include foil, sheet, strip and plate in O and H1x/H2x tempers. Annealed strength is low (20 MPa yield, 70 MPa tensile, 19 HB) and machinability is poor at 20, so heavy machining is best avoided. Service temperature is limited to about 200 °C; 1070A or 1050A are the usual choices when purity requirements are less strict. 1080A has a density of 2.7 g/cm³ (0.0975 lb/in³), lighter than 59% of aluminum grades. It melts at 646°C (1,195 °F). 1080A has a yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 70 MPa (10.2 ksi) — weaker than 100% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 69 GPa (10 Msi).

Working with 1080A
Is 1080A easy to machine?
Very gummy — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, sharp edges and generous lubricant/air blast to avoid built-up edge and smearing; harder H16/H18 tempers cut cleaner than O.
Can 1080A be welded?
Excellent with TIG/MIG using 1188 or 1100 filler; resistance and friction-stir welding also work, but the weld zone anneals back to O-temper strength.
Can 1080A be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, spinning, foil rolling and tight-radius bending in O/H1x2 tempers; expect strong work hardening and interstage annealing at 340–410 °C.

What surface finishes work on 1080A?
Bright dips and specular polishes to very high reflectivity; clear/bright anodizing gives water-clear films, and the soft substrate needs care to avoid handling scratches before coating.
