Working with 5147-N

Is 5147 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or spheroidized condition (≈60 % of 1212); above 35 HRC use carbide or CBN with rigid setups and finish-grind critical fits.

Can 5147 be welded?

Poor weldability — 0.48 % C with 1 % Cr gives high hardenability; preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and immediate stress relief/temper, or avoid welding entirely.

Can 5147 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1050–1200 °C, finish above 900 °C and normalize; cold forming only in spheroidized condition with generous bend radii.

What surface finishes work on 5147?

No anodizing; use phosphate + oil, black oxide, zinc or hard chrome plating, and bake after plating to avoid hydrogen embrittlement above 1000 MPa.
