Working with BAg-9-ANN

Is BAg-9 easy to machine?

Rarely machined — gummy and smearing; use sharp, high-rake tools, light feeds and collect all chips for silver recovery.

Can BAg-9 be welded?

Not a structural weld metal; join with torch, induction, furnace or resistance brazing at 718–843 °C with a fast heat-up to limit zinc loss.

Can BAg-9 be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed material draws to fine wire and rolls to thin strip easily; stamped ring/washer preforms are standard, interanneal after heavy reductions.

What surface finishes work on BAg-9?

Bright, near-sterling-white fillets polish and buff readily; pickle off flux residues immediately, and expect gradual sulfide tarnish in industrial air.

BAg-9-ANN — frequently asked

What is BAg-9-ANN used for?

BAg-9-ANN is typically used for jewelry and flatware brazing, food service equipment and decorative metalwork. In short: 65% silver, cadmium-free; near-sterling color match; highly formable filler.

What is the yield strength of BAg-9-ANN?

BAg-9-ANN has a typical yield strength of 170 MPa (24.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) — weaker than 64% of precious metal grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is BAg-9-ANN easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, worse than 60% of precious metal grades). Rarely machined — gummy and smearing; use sharp, high-rake tools, light feeds and collect all chips for silver recovery.

Can BAg-9-ANN be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (30/100). Not a structural weld metal; join with torch, induction, furnace or resistance brazing at 718–843 °C with a fast heat-up to limit zinc loss.

What surface finishes work on BAg-9-ANN?

Bright, near-sterling-white fillets polish and buff readily; pickle off flux residues immediately, and expect gradual sulfide tarnish in industrial air.

Can BAg-9-ANN be formed, bent or molded?

Annealed material draws to fine wire and rolls to thin strip easily; stamped ring/washer preforms are standard, interanneal after heavy reductions.

What is the maximum service temperature of BAg-9-ANN?

BAg-9-ANN is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between BAg-9-ANN and BAg-9 Hard?

ANN is the default condition — standard stock condition for BAg-9 wire, rod, strip and preforms — soft and ductile for coiling, cutting and preform stamping. Hard: pick for spring-back rings, self-supporting preforms and automatic feeding where stiffer wire is needed; anneals out on heating to brazing temperature. Yield strength is 170 MPa in ANN versus 520 MPa in Hard.
