Working with ERTi-12-SR

Is ERTi-12 easy to machine?

Rarely machined as a consumable; if the deposit is machined use low surface speed, rigid setup, sharp uncoated or AlTiN carbide and flood coolant to avoid galling and ignition of fines.

Can ERTi-12 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW with 99.995 % argon or Ar-He, trailing shield and full back-purge; keep interpass below ~150 °C, wipe wire with acetone and reject any weld showing straw/blue-plus discolouration.

Can ERTi-12 be formed, bent or molded?

Weldments form like Grade 12 sheet — bend at ≥3–4 t radius cold, or warm-form at 200–300 °C; springback is high and stress relief after forming is recommended.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-12?

Pickle in HNO3-HF or bead-blast plus nitric passivation to restore the oxide; can be colour anodized (AMS 2488) — never grind with iron-contaminated media.

ERTi-12-SR — frequently asked

What is ERTi-12-SR used for?

ERTi-12-SR is typically used for welding Grade 12 heat exchangers, seawater and brine handling equipment, marine piping systems and cost-effective alternative to Pd-alloyed welds. In short: lower-cost corrosion filler; stronger than CP fillers; alternative to ERTi-7.

What is the yield strength of ERTi-12-SR?

ERTi-12-SR has a typical yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 66% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 2 listed tempers.

Is ERTi-12-SR easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (26/100, better than 57% of titanium grades). Rarely machined as a consumable; if the deposit is machined use low surface speed, rigid setup, sharp uncoated or AlTiN carbide and flood coolant to avoid galling and ignition of fines.

Can ERTi-12-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100). GTAW/GMAW/PAW with 99.995 % argon or Ar-He, trailing shield and full back-purge; keep interpass below ~150 °C, wipe wire with acetone and reject any weld showing straw/blue-plus discolouration.

What surface finishes work on ERTi-12-SR?

Can ERTi-12-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Weldments form like Grade 12 sheet — bend at ≥3–4 t radius cold, or warm-form at 200–300 °C; springback is high and stress relief after forming is recommended.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERTi-12-SR?

ERTi-12-SR is rated for continuous use to about 315°C (599 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERTi-12-AW and ERTi-12-SR?

AW is the default condition — default condition: undiluted weld metal deposited under full argon shielding, no post-weld heat treatment. SR: pick when residual stress or hydrogen/stress-corrosion sensitivity matters in heavy-section or formed weldments. Yield strength is 460 MPa in AW versus 440 MPa in SR.
