Working with En25 Normalized

Is En25 easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed or condition-T state with rigid setups, sharp carbide and generous coolant; above ~340 HB expect reduced speeds and consider grinding for finish features.

Can En25 be welded?

Weldable only with care: preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen consumables, and immediate post-weld temper below the last tempering temperature; avoid welding on finished Q&T parts.

Can En25 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1200 °C then normalize; cold forming is impractical except mild straightening in the annealed condition.

What surface finishes work on En25?

Not anodizable — protect with black oxide, phosphate + oil, hard chrome, zinc or cadmium plating (bake to relieve hydrogen at high strength), or nitride for wear surfaces.

En25 Normalized — frequently asked

What is En25 Normalized used for?

En25 Normalized is typically used for heavy-duty shafts, gears, aircraft components and axles. In short: 4340-class Ni-Cr-Mo steel; high strength with core toughness; deep-hardening large sections.

What is the yield strength of En25 Normalized?

En25 Normalized has a typical yield strength of 570 MPa (82.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) — stronger than 74% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 10 listed tempers.

Is En25 Normalized easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (52/100, better than 52% of steel grades). Machine in the annealed or condition-T state with rigid setups, sharp carbide and generous coolant; above ~340 HB expect reduced speeds and consider grinding for finish features.

Can En25 Normalized be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (30/100). Weldable only with care: preheat 250–350 °C, low-hydrogen consumables, and immediate post-weld temper below the last tempering temperature; avoid welding on finished Q&T parts.

What surface finishes work on En25 Normalized?

Not anodizable — protect with black oxide, phosphate + oil, hard chrome, zinc or cadmium plating (bake to relieve hydrogen at high strength), or nitride for wear surfaces.

Can En25 Normalized be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge at 1050–1200 °C then normalize; cold forming is impractical except mild straightening in the annealed condition.

What is the maximum service temperature of En25 Normalized?

En25 Normalized is rated for continuous use to about 400°C (752 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between En25-T and En25-Z?

T is the default condition — most commonly stocked hardened-and-tempered band: best balance of strength, toughness and machinability. Z: maximum-strength low-temper condition for special high-stress parts; toughness and machinability are marginal. Yield strength is 700 MPa in T versus 1,330 MPa in Z.
