What is ENiCrMo-1?
ENiCrMo-1 is the shielded metal arc covered electrode counterpart to ERNiCrMo-1 (UNS W80001), used for manual welding of Hastelloy W and similar reducing-service nickel alloys. It is chosen for field and maintenance repairs where GTAW access or shielding gas is impractical, and is supplied as flux-covered stick electrodes in standard diameters. As-welded deposits give about 450 MPa yield, 690 MPa tensile, 35% elongation and 90 HRB, with service to 540 °C and a corrosion rating of 82. Electrodes require redrying and careful storage, deposits are slow to machine, and availability is limited; ERNiCrMo-1 wire is the GTAW/GMAW equivalent. ENiCrMo-1 has a density of 8.3 g/cm³ (0.3 lb/in³), lighter than 52% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,260°C (2,300 °F). ENiCrMo-1 has a yield strength of 450 MPa (65.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — stronger than 66% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 196 GPa (28.4 Msi).
What is ENiCrMo-1 used for?
- manual SMAW repair of Ni-Mo alloys
- reducing acid process vessels
- field maintenance welding
Limitations
- Hard to polish — 55/100, worse than 95% of nickel alloy grades
- Limited service temperature — 540°C (1,004 °F), worse than 75% of nickel alloy grades

Working with ENiCrMo-1
Is ENiCrMo-1 easy to machine?
Deposits are gummy and work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed/heavy positive feed and flood coolant; grinding of weld caps is often faster than turning.
Can ENiCrMo-1 be welded?
DCEP, low heat input, stringer beads, interpass typically below 100–150 °C; redry electrodes per the maker (about 250–300 °C) and keep in a heated quiver to avoid porosity and hot cracking.
Can ENiCrMo-1 be formed, bent or molded?
Not a wrought product; weld deposits tolerate light peening but heavy cold forming of the joint is not recommended.
