What is Hastelloy S?
Hastelloy S (UNS N06635) is a solid-solution-strengthened Ni-Cr-Mo alloy from the Hastelloy corrosion-alloy family, formulated for thermal stability and fabricability rather than peak strength. Engineers select it for flexible, thin-gauge hot-gas hardware — sheet, strip, foil, welded tube and wire — where repeated thermal cycling and high formability (formability score 80) matter; typical properties are 455 MPa yield, 895 MPa tensile, 50 % elongation, 200 HB. Service is limited to about 1050 °C, machinability is poor (score 24), and availability is mainly restricted to thin product forms. Where higher structural strength at temperature is needed, Hastelloy X is the usual alternative. Hastelloy S has a density of 8.76 g/cm³ (0.316 lb/in³), heavier than 80% of nickel alloy grades. It melts at 1,335°C (2,435 °F). Hastelloy S has a yield strength of 455 MPa (66 ksi) and a tensile strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) — stronger than 67% of nickel alloy grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 212 GPa (30.7 Msi).

Working with Hastelloy S
Is Hastelloy S easy to machine?
Machine like other Hastelloy grades: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, low speed (~15–25 m/min) with heavy feed, flood coolant, and avoid dwelling to prevent rapid work hardening.
Can Hastelloy S be welded?
Readily joined by GTAW/GMAW/resistance welding with matching S filler; keep interpass temperature low, no PWHT normally needed, and the alloy is notably resistant to strain-age cracking.
Can Hastelloy S be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in the annealed condition (deep-drawn bellows, hose convolutions); expect high springback and forming loads, anneal at ~1065 °C between heavy operations.

What surface finishes work on Hastelloy S?
Not anodizable; use pickling/passivation, abrasive blasting or electropolish — oxide from hot forming is tenacious and needs grit blast plus acid pickle before welding.
