Chemical & Environmental3

Corrosion resistance is excellent (92/100), better than 91% of nickel alloy grades.

Chemical Resistance SummaryExcellent in reducing media: hot hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric and formic/acetic acids, plus wet chlorine, chlorides and hypochlorite; resists chloride SCC and pitting/crevice attack. Ti-stabilized and low C/Si so the weld HAZ stays corrosion-resistant. Less suited than C-22/C-276 to strongly oxidizing acids (hot nitric, ferric/cupric chloride at high concentration).

Working with Hastelloy C-4

Is Hastelloy C-4 easy to machine?

Machines like other C-type Hastelloys: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, slow speed (~15–25 m/min), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can Hastelloy C-4 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/PAW with matching ERNiCrMo-7 filler, low heat input and no preheat; the Ti stabilization means no post-weld solution anneal is required for corrosion service.

Can Hastelloy C-4 be formed, bent or molded?

Formed cold in the annealed condition but work-hardens rapidly — allow extra power, generous bend radii and intermediate anneals at 1065–1120 °C with rapid quench; hot work 900–1200 °C.

Hastelloy C-4 — frequently asked

What is Hastelloy C-4 used for?

Hastelloy C-4 is typically used for chemical process piping, welded pressure vessels, high-temperature HCl service and pickling equipment. In short: ti-stabilized C-family alloy; stable corrosion after welding; no post-weld anneal required.

What is the yield strength of Hastelloy C-4?

Hastelloy C-4 has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 785 MPa (114 ksi) — stronger than 56% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is Hastelloy C-4 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (18/100, worse than 61% of nickel alloy grades). Machines like other C-type Hastelloys: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, slow speed (~15–25 m/min), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.

Can Hastelloy C-4 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/PAW with matching ERNiCrMo-7 filler, low heat input and no preheat; the Ti stabilization means no post-weld solution anneal is required for corrosion service.

What is the maximum service temperature of Hastelloy C-4?

Hastelloy C-4 is rated for continuous use to about 1,000°C (1,832 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Hastelloy C-4-SA and Hastelloy C-4-CW?

SA is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, tube and forgings; maximum corrosion resistance and ductility. CW: use where higher strength and hardness are needed (springs, fasteners, wire) and the extra cold work is acceptable for corrosion service. Yield strength is 400 MPa in SA versus 800 MPa in CW.
