Working with Hastelloy B
Is Hastelloy B easy to machine?
Machine like an annealed austenitic Ni-Mo alloy: rigid setup, positive-rake sharp carbide, slow speeds (~10–20 m/min carbide turning), heavy positive feeds to cut under the work-hardened layer, flood sulfochlorinated coolant.
Can Hastelloy B be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching ERNiMo-1/ENiMo-1, low heat input, no preheat, interpass under 100 °C; solution anneal at ~1150 °C and water quench after welding for HCl service to avoid HAZ carbide and knife-line attack.
Can Hastelloy B be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms readily but work-hardens fast — use ~50 % more power than 304, generous radii and intermediate anneals; hot work 1180–950 °C then water quench, never finish below ~900 °C.

What surface finishes work on Hastelloy B?
Pickle in HF/HNO3 sparingly (nitric attacks the alloy — prefer grit blast plus HCl-free descale), then mechanically polish or electropolish; no anodizing, and no coating is normally needed.

Hastelloy B — frequently asked
What is Hastelloy B used for?
Hastelloy B is typically used for hydrochloric acid processing equipment, chemical reactor vessels and pumps and valves in reducing acid service. In short: benchmark HCl-resistant alloy; superseded by Hastelloy B-2; no oxidizing-media service.
What is the yield strength of Hastelloy B?
Hastelloy B has a typical yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 830 MPa (120 ksi) — weaker than 53% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is Hastelloy B easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (22/100, better than 64% of nickel alloy grades). Machine like an annealed austenitic Ni-Mo alloy: rigid setup, positive-rake sharp carbide, slow speeds (~10–20 m/min carbide turning), heavy positive feeds to cut under the work-hardened layer, flood sulfochlorinated coolant.
Can Hastelloy B be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (55/100). GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching ERNiMo-1/ENiMo-1, low heat input, no preheat, interpass under 100 °C; solution anneal at ~1150 °C and water quench after welding for HCl service to avoid HAZ carbide and knife-line attack.

What is the maximum service temperature of Hastelloy B?
Hastelloy B is rated for continuous use to about 480°C (896 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between Hastelloy B-SA and Hastelloy B-CW?
SA is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, bar, pipe and fittings — maximum corrosion resistance and ductility. CW: cold-drawn bar, wire and tube where higher strength and closer tolerance matter more than optimum corrosion resistance. Yield strength is 380 MPa in SA versus 860 MPa in CW.
