What is ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1?

ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 is a high-strength complex cast brass alloyed with aluminium, manganese and iron, comparable to EN CC765S. Default-condition properties are 195 MPa yield, 480 MPa tensile, 25% elongation and about 105 HB, with service to 200 °C, so it is used for sand, permanent-mould, centrifugal and continuous castings that carry load and slide against steel. Machinability is moderate at roughly 30% of free-cutting brass and the iron-rich hard phases abrade tooling; fusion welding is limited to repair. For higher strength and hardness in the same family, step up to ZCuZn26Al4Fe3Mn3. ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 has a density of 8.5 g/cm³ (0.307 lb/in³), lighter than 65% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 880°C (1,616 °F). ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 has a yield strength of 195 MPa (28.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) — weaker than 56% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 100 GPa (14.5 Msi).

Working with ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1

Is ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 easy to machine?

Machinability is about 30% of free-cutting brass, and the iron-rich hard phases wear cutting edges. Use carbide tooling with a large positive rake at moderate speed with ample coolant.

Can ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 be welded?

Repair welding is possible by GTAW/GMAW with aluminium-bronze or silicon-bronze filler. Preheat to 150-200 °C, control zinc evaporation and the aluminium oxide film, and cool slowly after welding to avoid cracking.

Can ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 be formed, bent or molded?

Casting alloy: pour at approximately 1000-1050 °C using bottom gating and steady mould filling, with enough feeders to prevent slag entrapment and shrinkage porosity. Keep wall-thickness transitions gradual.
