What is C27400?
C27400 is a 63/37 yellow brass (CuZn37, CW508L) in the wrought copper–zinc family, strengthened by cold work rather than by alloying additions. It gives a balanced combination of strength and cold workability — 340 MPa yield, 425 MPa tensile, 23% elongation and 125 HB (70 HRB) in the default condition — and is stocked as strip, sheet, rod and wire in tempers from O60 through H10 for hardware and stampings. Machinability is only about 30% of free-cutting brass, fusion welding is limited by zinc volatilisation, and service is capped near 150 °C, with cold-worked parts needing stress relief to avoid season cracking. Use C36000 when turning volume drives cost. C27400 has a density of 8.44 g/cm³ (0.305 lb/in³), lighter than 70% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 900°C (1,652 °F). C27400 has a yield strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 425 MPa (61.6 ksi) — stronger than 71% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 23% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with C27400
Is C27400 easy to machine?
Machinable but chip-forming (rating ~30% of free-cutting brass) — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed and light feed; choose C36000 if turning volume matters.
Can C27400 be welded?
Resistance and brazing/soldering are excellent; fusion welding is only fair because zinc volatilises — use low-heat processes with ventilation and Si-bronze filler.
Can C27400 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in O60/H01 for deep drawing and bending; harder tempers need generous bend radii and stress-relief (250–300 °C) to avoid season cracking.
C27400 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Cuincludes silver | 61 – 64 | 63 |
| Pbsmall intentional lead addition | 0.05 – 0.15 | 0.1 |
| Fe | ≤ 0.05 | |

What surface finishes work on C27400?
Polishes to a bright yellow finish, takes Ni/Cr/Ag electroplating and chemical patinas readily; lacquer or clear-coat to prevent tarnish (not anodizable).
