What is C44300?

C44300 is an arsenical admiralty brass (Cu-28Zn-1Sn with a trace arsenic inhibitor) supplied to ASTM B111 and equivalent to CuZn28Sn1As / CW706R and HSn70-1AS. Tin plus arsenic suppress dezincification and impingement attack in seawater and steam, so the alloy is used mainly as seamless condenser tube in O61/OS annealed tempers and H55–H80 drawn tempers. Annealed properties are 125 MPa yield, 340 MPa tensile, 65 % elongation and 70 HB, with 25 % IACS conductivity and 200 °C maximum service temperature. Machinability is about 30 % of free-cutting brass and the alloy is ammonia-SCC sensitive; for rod and forgings choose naval brass C46400/C46500. C44300 has a density of 8.53 g/cm³ (0.308 lb/in³), lighter than 62% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 900°C (1,652 °F). C44300 has a yield strength of 125 MPa (18.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — weaker than 77% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 65% and the elastic modulus is 110 GPa (16 Msi).
