What is C21000?
C21000 is a 95/5 copper-zinc alpha brass (gilding metal, CuZn5, CW500L) that gains strength only by cold work and is stocked as strip, sheet, rod and wire in OS050 through H10 tempers. Engineers select it for a formability score of 97 — the highest in the wrought brass group — a gold-like color and 56 % IACS electrical conductivity, which suits coining, deep drawing and severe bending. Annealed strength is modest at 240 MPa tensile, 75 MPa yield, 45 % elongation and 45 HB, service is capped near 200 °C, and machinability is only about 20 % of C36000, so specify C36000 where turning dominates. C21000 has a density of 8.86 g/cm³ (0.32 lb/in³), heavier than 68% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,055°C (1,931 °F). C21000 has a yield strength of 75 MPa (10.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 240 MPa (34.8 ksi) — weaker than 91% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 115 GPa (16.7 Msi).

Working with C21000
Is C21000 easy to machine?
Gummy, low machinability (~20% of C36000) — use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, generous coolant and avoid dwell; not a screw-machine alloy.
Can C21000 be welded?
Excellent for soldering and brazing; GTAW/GMAW acceptable with ERCu/CuSi filler and low heat input, resistance welding only fair due to high conductivity.
Can C21000 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding deep drawing, coining, spinning and severe bending in OS tempers; interanneal at 425–650 °C and stress-relieve formed parts (~200–260 °C) to prevent season cracking.
C21000 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
