What is C36500?
C36500 (CW610N) is a leaded Muntz metal — a duplex 60/40 wrought brass with about 0.5% Pb added for chip breaking while retaining the hot workability of the base alloy. It is used where large hot-formed or drilled sections are needed, at 372 MPa tensile, 140 MPa yield, 45% elongation, 80 HB and 26% IACS, typically as plate, tube sheet and hot-forged shapes. Service is limited to 200 °C, cold formability is only fair, and the lead prevents reliable fusion welding; unleaded Muntz metal is the alternative where welding is required. C36500 has a density of 8.41 g/cm³ (0.304 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 885°C (1,625 °F). C36500 has a yield strength of 140 MPa (20.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 372 MPa (54 ksi) — weaker than 74% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with C36500
Is C36500 easy to machine?
Free-machining for a duplex brass — use zero-to-slightly-negative rake carbide or HSS, high speed, light feed, water-soluble coolant; chips break well thanks to the 0.5% Pb.
Can C36500 be welded?
Fusion welding is not recommended (lead causes hot cracking, zinc fumes); join by silver brazing or soft soldering, or seal-weld with matched filler only when unavoidable and with fume extraction.
Can C36500 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent hot working at 650–780 °C (forging, extrusion, hot rolling); cold formability is only fair — anneal to O61 before severe bending or tube-hole expansion.
C36500 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Cu | 58 – 61 | 60 |
| Pbfree-machining phase | 0.25 – 0.7 | 0.5 |
| Fe | ≤ 0.15 | |
| Snmax (where specified) | ≤ 0.25 | |
| Znremainder, nominally ~39% | balance |
What surface finishes work on C36500?
Takes a bright mechanical or chemical polish and accepts Ni/Cr or tin plating; not anodizable — protect decorative surfaces with clear lacquer, and avoid ammonia-bearing cleaners to prevent SCC.
