What is C28500?
C28500 is a duplex (α+β) 60/40 Muntz-metal-type brass supplied mainly in as-manufactured M20, M30 and M40 conditions alongside O60/O61 anneals and H01–H04 cold-worked tempers. Engineers specify it for hot workability and strength in forged and extruded parts: 145 MPa yield, 380 MPa tensile, 45% elongation and 70 HB in the default condition, with 28% IACS conductivity and service to 200 °C. Cold formability is limited and fusion welding causes zinc fuming and porosity, so severe cold work needs interstage annealing. C28000 Muntz metal is the closest alternative for hot-worked stock. C28500 has a density of 8.39 g/cm³ (0.303 lb/in³), lighter than 76% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 899°C (1,650 °F). C28500 has a yield strength of 145 MPa (21 ksi) and a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) — weaker than 72% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with C28500
Is C28500 easy to machine?
Machines like a duplex brass — roughly 40 % of free-cutting C36000: use sharp positive-rake tools, high speed, light feeds and coolant; the β phase chips well but is gummier than leaded brass.
Can C28500 be welded?
Best joined by brazing or soldering; TIG/MIG with silicon-bronze filler is possible but zinc fuming, porosity and dezincified weld zones require extraction and low heat input.
Can C28500 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent hot working at 620–780 °C (forge, extrude, hot roll); cold formability is limited — anneal at 425–600 °C between severe cold operations and stress-relieve to avoid SCC.
C28500 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |

What surface finishes work on C28500?
Takes a bright mechanical polish and accepts Ni/Cr or decorative plating; not anodizable — protect with lacquer or chemical bronze/black finishes, and stress-relieve before plating to prevent cracking.

How much does C28500 cost?
C28500 is a high-cost copper alloy ($$$$), pricier than about 78% of the materials FabDigit quotes. Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on the raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.
