What is C47000?

C47000 is a copper-zinc-tin low-fuming bronze rod of the naval brass type, used as a braze-welding filler for steel, cast iron, galvanized steel and brass, with a close colour match to yellow brass. Deposits are ductile and machinable at 350 MPa tensile, 160 MPa yield, 32 % elongation and HB 100 (HRB 60), and rod is supplied bare, flux-coated or in the O60 temper. It is applied at 850-900 °C with borate flux, keeping the base metal below its melting point; electrical conductivity is only 26 % IACS, service is limited to about 200 °C, and zinc fume requires ventilation. C47000 has a density of 8.41 g/cm³ (0.304 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 885°C (1,625 °F). C47000 has a yield strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) — weaker than 65% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 100 GPa (14.5 Msi).

Working with C47000

Is C47000 easy to machine?

Braze deposits machine like naval brass (~30 % of AISI 1212): use sharp positive-rake tools, light feeds; unleaded, so chips are stringy.

Can C47000 be welded?

Braze weld with neutral-to-slightly-oxidising oxy-acetylene flame or TIG at 850–900 °C with borate flux; keep base metal below its melting point and ventilate for zinc fume.

Can C47000 be formed, bent or molded?

Rod is supplied straight or coiled; α+β structure cold-bends moderately, anneal near 500 °C if heavy forming is required.
