Working with 1145-H19
Is 1145 easy to machine?
Very gummy and low-strength — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, sharp tools and flood lubrication; expect burrs and built-up edge, and prefer H18/H19 over O for any chip cutting.
Can 1145 be welded?
Readily GTAW/GMAW/resistance welded with 1100 or 1188 filler, but foil gauges are normally joined by seaming, adhesive lamination or ultrasonic welding; welding fully anneals the H temper locally.
Can 1145 be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability in O temper (deep draw, foil embossing); H18/H19 needs generous bend radii or interstage annealing at 340–400 °C.
What surface finishes work on 1145?
Takes bright and clear anodising very well thanks to high purity; also accepts chromate/no-chrome conversion coats, adhesive lamination and printing — degrease rolling oil before coating.
