Working with SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC

Is SNCM447 easy to machine?

Machining is most economical in the annealed condition or after quench and temper to 32 HRC or below. At 40 HRC and above use coated carbide or CBN with low speed, high feed and full coolant; complete deep holes and threads before hardening where possible.

Can SNCM447 be welded?

High carbon equivalent and strong hardening tendency mean welding is generally not recommended. When unavoidable, use low-hydrogen consumables, 200-300 °C preheat, controlled interpass temperature and an immediate post-weld temper slightly below the original tempering temperature.

Can SNCM447 be formed, bent or molded?

Warm forming and forging are practical only from the annealed condition — start at 1150-1200 °C and finish at 850 °C or above. Slow cool after forging and normalize or anneal to remove flake (white spots) and residual stress.

What surface finishes work on SNCM447?

No corrosion resistance; typical finishes are black oxide, phosphate, Dacromet, zinc plating or hard chrome. Bake plated high-strength parts at 190-220 °C for hydrogen removal, and shot peen to raise fatigue life significantly.

SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC has a typical yield strength of 1,500 MPa (218 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,750 MPa (254 ksi) — stronger than 97% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.

Is SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (42/100, worse than 73% of steel grades). Machining is most economical in the annealed condition or after quench and temper to 32 HRC or below. At 40 HRC and above use coated carbide or CBN with low speed, high feed and full coolant; complete deep holes and threads before hardening where possible.

Can SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC be welded?

Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). High carbon equivalent and strong hardening tendency mean welding is generally not recommended. When unavoidable, use low-hydrogen consumables, 200-300 °C preheat, controlled interpass temperature and an immediate post-weld temper slightly below the original tempering temperature.

Warm forming and forging are practical only from the annealed condition — start at 1150-1200 °C and finish at 850 °C or above. Slow cool after forging and normalize or anneal to remove flake (white spots) and residual stress.

What is the maximum service temperature of SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC?

SNCM447 QT-48-52HRC is rated for continuous use to about 180°C (356 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between SNCM447 QT-JIS and SNCM447-A?

QT-JIS is the default condition — use the standard JIS G4053 delivery state, oil quenched at 820–870 °C and tempered at 580–680 °C to 302–363 HB, for heavily loaded shafts, gears and connecting rods.
