Working with DD11-HR

Is DD11 easy to machine?

Soft and gummy — use sharp positive-rake tools, generous feed and coolant to avoid built-up edge and burrs; expect ~60 % of AISI 1212 speeds.

Can DD11 be welded?

Excellent for MIG/MAG, TIG, resistance spot and laser welding with ER70S-6 class filler; CEV ≈0.20–0.25 so no preheat needed at typical sheet gauges.

Can DD11 be formed, bent or molded?

Good for bending, roll forming and moderate stamping (bend radius ≈1×t transverse); for deep drawing step up to DD12/DD13 or a cold-rolled DC grade.

What surface finishes work on DD11?

No anodizing; protect by painting, powder coating, zinc phosphating, electro-zinc or hot-dip galvanizing — bare surface rusts within days in humid air.

What is the maximum service temperature of DD11-HR?

DD11-HR is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DD11 HRPO and DD11-SP?

HRPO is the default condition — standard stocked condition: descaled, clean surface, ready for cold forming, welding and painting. SP: light temper pass to improve flatness and suppress stretcher strains (Lüders lines) on visible pressed panels; slightly higher yield, slightly lower elongation. Yield strength is 220 MPa in HRPO versus 250 MPa in SP.
