What is BAg-26?
BAg-26 is a low-silver, cadmium-free, manganese-bearing braze filler (UNS P07250) used for economical general-purpose brazing of steel and copper alloys. It is the cost-driven choice in the BAg family, supplied as wire, strip and powder, with as-brazed values of 400 MPa tensile, 250 MPa yield, 25% elongation and 110 HB. Maximum service temperature is 200 °C, so it is not suitable for elevated-temperature joints, and the 800–870 °C brazing range with zinc fuming requires ventilation and controlled heating. Step up to BAg-22 or BAg-21 where higher strength or service temperature is needed. BAg-26 has a density of 8.8 g/cm³ (0.318 lb/in³), lighter than 94% of precious metal grades. It melts at 705°C (1,301 °F). BAg-26 has a yield strength of 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) and a tensile strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) — stronger than 81% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 90 GPa (13.1 Msi).

Working with BAg-26
Is BAg-26 easy to machine?
Rarely machined; the alloy is soft and gummy — use sharp tools and light feeds if trimming cast slugs.
Can BAg-26 be welded?
Not a structural weld filler; deposit by torch, induction or furnace brazing at 800–870 °C with a high-temperature borate flux, and avoid overheating to limit zinc fuming.
Can BAg-26 be formed, bent or molded?
Readily cold drawn to wire and rolled to thin strip/preforms with interstage annealing.
BAg-26 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| Ag | 24 – 26 | 25 |
| Cu | 37 – 39 | 38 |
| Mn | 1.5 – 2.5 | 2 |
| Ni | 1.5 – 2.5 | 2 |

| Zn | ≥ 31 (balance) |
What surface finishes work on BAg-26?
Joints are usually left as-brazed after flux removal in hot water/citric rinse; the fillet can be polished or nickel/chrome plated, and residual flux must be removed to prevent corrosion.
